A lot can change over the years. The Cooperative Cleaning Company opened in 1987 and has been keeping Bay Area homes immaculate ever since, through recessions, the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, a devastating firestorm, and a pandemic. Not because of systems or software. Because of people.
The company Sarah and Mike Neil run today looks different from the one that opened in 1987, but the principles haven’t changed once.
A residential housekeeping company for Bay Area clients who value discretion, consistency, and a company built on doing things properly.
Marian H. in Piedmont, a client since 1990, says “I really appreciate your total reliability in the 23 years I have used [your service]. You’ve never missed a single day!”. That’s not a marketing claim. It’s a fact with a name and a date attached to it. The same team arrives every visit. They know where things belong in your home, how you like the pillows arranged, and which products to use on your floors. The 90-95% same-team rate for recurring clients isn’t an accident. It’s built into how we hire, schedule, and pay.
Many cleaning services define a “standard clean” narrowly, then charge extra for anything outside it. Cooperative Cleaning works differently.
Before your first visit, we take time to understand your home, your priorities, and the details that matter most to you. From there, we build a custom Service Plan that reflects how your household actually lives.
We do provide a starter checklist to help guide the conversation, but it is only a starting point. The real plan is built around your home, your surfaces, your routines, and the things that matter to you.
The result is a maintenance plan tailored to your household, not a generic list. Each visit follows a documented Service Plan that reflects how your home is used. And we revisit it over time, adjusting as needs change.
Our employees receive wages well above the highest local minimums in the cities we serve, and they are paid portal-to-portal, from the time they come into our facility, till the time they clock out at our offices at the end of the day. They are offered Kaiser Platinum health coverage, Delta Dental, VSP vision, paid vacation, paid holidays, a 401(k) with a 4% employer match, and company-maintained late-model vehicles so they don’t have to use their own.
None of this is standard in the cleaning industry. We believe it should be.
For our clients, this is not a side issue. It is part of the service. A stable, well-supported team is the foundation for reliability, accountability, and the kind of long-term trust that private homes require.
Even our company vehicles are part of this standard. Maintaining a fleet of late-model Toyota RAV4s helps us reduce avoidable disruptions and arrive prepared. We cannot control Bay Area traffic, but we can control the systems, equipment, and support that make reliable service more likely.
Every person who enters your home is a W-2 employee of The Cooperative Cleaning Company, not a 1099 contractor, referral worker, or gig worker filling a slot. That distinction matters more than many people realize.
It means clearer accountability, proper workers’ compensation coverage, payroll taxes, unemployment insurance, training, supervision, and a direct employment relationship with the people doing the work.
It also means stability. When employees have reliable work, good pay, strong benefits, and a company that supports them, they are more likely to stay. For clients, that translates into lower turnover, more familiar teams, better continuity, and a more consistent experience inside the home.
Many of our employees have been with us for years; some for more than two decades. And when we do hire, we do so through employee referrals, which helps preserve the culture, standards, and trust that our clients depend on.
Founded in 1987, The Cooperative Cleaning Company is one of the Bay Area’s most established independent residential housekeeping companies. Its longevity rests on a simple idea: provide superior service to clients while creating a safe, stable, and respectful workplace for the people who do the work.
That standard became personal for Sarah Neil in 2011.
Sarah, a native of France, had been teaching French at The Crowden School in Berkeley for more than 12 years when a friend, the founder of Cooperative Cleaning, asked her to help with the human side of the business. Sarah already knew the company well, having been a client since 1994. When a longtime office employee retired, the owner began training Sarah in employee management, payroll, and logistics.
Not long afterward, he said something Sarah never forgot: “If something happens to me, take care of these women,” referring to the company’s employees, some of whom she had known for years.
A few weeks later, the owner died suddenly and left the company to Sarah.
What began as part-time help became a full-time responsibility overnight. Sarah stepped in to carry the company forward, honoring both its clients and the women whose work had built its reputation. Sarah’s husband, Mike, who was winding down a long career in enterprise software consulting, began working nights to help with accounting, logistics, and operating systems. Before long, he retired early to focus on Cooperative Cleaning full time.
Since then, Sarah and Mike have worked to strengthen the company from the inside out. Cooperative Cleaning uses environmentally responsible, Certified Green cleaning products and has built an employment model designed for stability, professionalism, and long-term service. Employees are compensated well above industry averages and receive benefits that include paid vacation, Platinum-level health care, a 401(k) with a 4% company match, dental and vision coverage, and company-maintained late-model Toyota RAV4s.
For clients, this matters in practical ways. Dependable systems, professional equipment, and reliable company transportation help ensure that Cooperative Cleaning shows up as promised. More importantly, stable, well-supported employees stay longer, know the company’s standards, and bring greater consistency and accountability into the homes they serve.
Cooperative Cleaning is not built around shortcuts, turnover, or anonymous crews. It is built around trust, continuity, and careful work.
Today, Cooperative Cleaning is guided by the same responsibility Sarah inherited: to care for our clients’ homes with professionalism, to care for employees with dignity, and to build lasting relationships based on trust.
Sarah was born in Toucy, France, and holds an MA in Anthropology from the Sorbonne in Paris. Before emigrating to the United States in 1992, she spent 12 years in Paris as personal assistant to internationally renowned sculptor and experimental artist Yaacov Agam. Sarah has also lived in Spain and speaks seven languages. As owner of The Cooperative Cleaning Company, she brings warmth, optimism, and deep personal commitment to the people at the heart of the business.
Mike is a fourth-generation Californian, born and raised in San Francisco, with family roots in Ireland and Norway. Educated in economics and law, he spent 10 years in finance and accounting before moving into large-scale enterprise software consulting, where he held staff and management roles for more than 30 years. At The Cooperative Cleaning Company, Mike brings that background in systems, finance, and operations to the company’s day-to-day reliability.
Our default is to use certified green cleaning products whenever possible, and that covers nearly all the work we do. Occasionally, a specific surface, stain, or buildup calls for a conventional product to achieve the right result. When that happens, we explain the reason, get your approval, and use the product carefully. We believe responsible cleaning is based on judgment, transparency, and trust, not blanket claims that ignore the realities of caring for a home.
